The U.S. Consulate in Havana has announced the expansion of its visa services, including new categories.
The United States Embassy in Havana defined the note published on its social networks about the expansion of its visa services as “Very Important Consular Information.”
It is important to remember that obtaining a visa appointment does not guarantee visa issuance, as applicants must demonstrate their eligibility under U.S. laws and regulations.
Additionally, they must submit the appropriate application, pay the applicable fees, and provide a valid passport along with a recent photograph.
It is also noted that applicants must meet the specific requirements of each type of visa and submit the corresponding documentation, such as Form I-797 Notice of Action for categories H, L, O, P, Q and R, or Form DS-2019 for the J visa.
Only after presenting this documentation can an interview be scheduled at the embassy.
New visa categories at the US Embassy in Cuba starting in August
Among the new categories included are those for temporary work visas and exchange programs starting Monday, August 19.
This expansion will allow Cuban citizens with temporary work petitions approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and participants in exchange programs with an approved Certificate of Eligibility to schedule visa interviews at the embassy.
It is crucial to note that this update not included business visas (B-1) and tourist visas (B-2), which will remain suspended in Havana. Cubans who need these visas will have to continue their procedures at other U.S. embassies or consulates.
US Visa Categories and Their Nomenclature
- H: Temporary workers or apprentices.
- J: Exchange visitors.
- L: Transfers within the same company.
- O: Workers with extraordinary abilities or achievements.
- P: Athletes, artists and entertainers.
- Q: Participants in international cultural exchange programs.
