U.S. National Security Advisor Sullivan met with Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Vienna over two days on October 10 and 11. The White House called the meeting “meaningful and constructive.” With regard to relations between the United States and China, where even regular communication has ceased, the stance of both countries aiming to ease tensions emerges.

Plans for the two to meet were not made public in advance. The meeting could lead to a meeting between US President Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The White House said in a statement that the discussions included “major issues in US-China relations, global and regional security, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and the Taiwan issue.”

China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on the meeting as “part of an ongoing effort to maintain open communication channels and manage competition responsibly.” He said the talks were “candid, in-depth, meaningful and constructive” and aimed to “remove obstacles” in U.S.-China relations.
