Innsbruck (OTS) – The coming super election year will not only determine where Austria is heading. It will have a global impact.
Man has the choice. This is what characterizes being human. Democracies do justice to this by regularly calling on their citizens to elect political representatives. This sets the direction that the community, state or state should take. A number of such decisions will be made in Austria alone in 2024.
However, elections in some of the world’s most influential states and alliances of states will influence not only national but world events. Because it doesn’t matter whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden spends another term in the White House. It is not irrelevant whether nationalist or pro-EU groups are in charge in the European Parliament. And it doesn’t matter that only the incumbent Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin can win the election in Russia. The latter election is pure farce. It obscures an autocratic system that no longer even gives people the choice of words to express facts, as the war of aggression once morest Ukraine shows.
The example of Russia should be a warning – also in Austria. Although populists would like to believe that strong leaders, the raising of borders and the disenfranchisement of those who think differently are necessary for the country and its people to be better off, it does not bring the so-called “people” a cent more and no respect for the citizen. Governing well means finding compromises that everyone can live with and that do not favor any individual. This may take time, this may feel like an endless argument. And what is usually lost is the fact that something is still going on. Above all, it protects: everyone is at risk of ending up on the side of the disenfranchised in authoritarian systems.
