Wide receiver Tyreek Hill has opened up about the circumstances that led to his transfer from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Miami Dolphins.
“There were many moments during the year where we felt that Tyreek was underused and not fully appreciated and that they really didn’t take full advantage of all of his skills and talent,” said Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus on the It Needed To Be Said podcast.
Hill pointed out that the inconsistency in goals throughout the season was one of the many factors that contributed to his departure from Kansas City.
“If teams are giving us advantageous one-on-ones, I don’t understand why teams aren’t using their best receiver,” Hill said.
“Tyreek wanted to be there,” Rosenhaus added. “Tyreek wanted to be in Kansas City. We tried to do an overtime with them.”
The former fifth-round pick says he was willing to return to the Chiefs on a contract that calls for an average annual salary of $25 million to $26 million, but the Chiefs were unwilling to negotiate anywhere near those numbers.
Hill, a three-time All-Pro, had 111 receptions, 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns in 2021. After the season, Hill informed the team that he would like to stay with the franchise.
Hill was eventually traded to Miami in exchange for five draft picks, including a 2022 first-round pick. The six-time Pro Bowl wideout then signed a four-year, $120 million deal with the Dolphins that included $72.2 million in guarantees.
The Chiefs decided to go one step further, signing veterans JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling to pair with All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce.
Miami, on the other hand, has added a versatile weapon to its passing game in Hill, which also includes Jaylen Waddle and Cedrick Wilson. Hill also praised his new quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, saying he’s more accurate than former teammate Patrick Mahomes.
“Obviously 15 (Mahomes) has the strongest arm but in terms of accuracy I’m always with Tua.”
