Typhoon Shanshan is moving towards Japan, causing fear across the country

Typhoon Shanshan hits the island region of Amami in southwest Japan on Tuesday. Japanwhich is expected to reach the island of Kyushu in the coming days, which could affect a large part of the Japanese archipelago.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the tropical cyclone is moving slowly, increasing in intensity and could cause prolonged disruptions across the country. Some bullet train journeys have already begun to be cancelled due to heavy rain.

The JMA classifies Shanshan, the 10th typhoon of the Pacific season, as a “major” typhoon. It is expected to hit the Tokara Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture on Wednesday and southern Kyushu, the country’s second most populous island, on Thursday, with peak gusts exceeding 200 kilometers per hour.

The local weather agency forecast heavy rains on Tuesday on Japan’s western and eastern Pacific coasts, as well as in the Amami region. It also urged residents to be on the lookout for possible landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and river overflows.

Rain is expected to fall in the southwestern region from Wednesday, continuing well into Thursday, with accumulations of up to 400 millimetres in 24 hours.

Heavy rainfall has already led to the suspension of some Tokaido Line bullet train services between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka stations.

Services on the Tokaido and Sanyo high-speed lines, which connect Osaka and Fukuoka, are expected to experience partial or complete disruptions between Thursday and Saturday. Bullet train lines in Kyushu may also implement similar measures starting tomorrow, Wednesday.
