TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan’s meteorological authorities have warned residents of heavy rain and strong winds beginning Wednesday as Typhoon Saola skirts the island’s southern coast on its way to China’s southern coast. .
The typhoon is moving in a northwesterly direction with sustained winds of 162 km/h (101 mph) and gusts of up to 198 km/h (123 mph), according to Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Bureau. The center of the meteor will not strike the island, but its outer bands are expected to brush the southern cities.
The weather agency also warned late Monday that large waves and tidal waves are expected to make boat travel dangerous.
Heavy rains are expected in eastern and southern Taiwan between Wednesday and Thursday. The Taiwanese agency has classified the storm as a medium-strength typhoon and said there is a slight chance it might gain strength.
The typhoon is expected to hit southern China’s Fujian and Guangdong provinces later.
Saola caused flooding in the northern part of the Philippines in recent days, displacing hundreds of people, although no fatalities have been reported.
