Dr. Hossam Mawafi, Professor of Critical Cases at Kasr Al-Ainy College of Medicine, warned of coma, because it usually indicates very serious diseases.

Muwafi said during his hosting of the “Sabahak Masri” program, broadcast on MBC Egypt, that coma is a condition in which the patient does not respond to pain, stressing that diabetics are among the groups most vulnerable to exposure.

The Professor of Critical Care Medicine attributed the reason why the diabetic patient was in a coma to the disturbance of blood sugar levels, whether high or low.

Mowafi described the fainting caused by hypoglycemia as a “fatal coma”, noting that there are symptoms that precede the loss of consciousness that should be carefully noted, such as rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, feeling hungry, chills and dizziness.

He recommended diabetics to eat a piece of candy as soon as these symptoms appear, to control low blood sugar, before it develops into a coma.

The professor of critical cases revealed that the coma caused by high blood sugar may occur without cause, especially for the elderly, or result from high acetone or lactic acid in the body.
