According to Etienne Coquoz, central secretary and responsible for French-speaking Switzerland, “the group’s decision for this type of measure is taken in Zurich months in advance. The consultation period during collective layoffs should nevertheless make it possible to open dialogue between employees and employers, but TX Group saw it as a simple formality delaying savings measures already cast in stone.”

Two waves of layoffs
Tamedia, a TX Group company, announced on September 20 the elimination of 28 positions in its French-speaking editorial offices, namely the newspapers Matin Dimanche, 24 Heures, the Tribune de Genève and the T editorial team. The consultation procedure has ended at the end of October and the layoffs were announced.
At the same time, TX Group announced on October 25 28 layoffs within the French-speaking editorial team of 20 minutes, including lematin.ch and Sport-Center. The consultation procedure ended last Friday. The layoffs have not yet been announced, but should be announced during next week, according to impressum.

Possible support from Aventinus
In mid-November, the journalists of 20 minutes asked the management of TX Group to extend the consultation period by ten days and to contact the Aventinus Foundation to request support. This extension was refused, but the question of support remains unresolved, even if it will not save places, a collaborator of 20 minutes told Keystone-ATS.
The elimination of positions at Tamedia is part of a package of savings of 6 million throughout Switzerland. The cuts at 20 minutes are justified by TX Group by a “clear decline” in turnover.
