Tried for involuntary manslaughter, Rennes striker Mathis Lambourde was given a two-year suspended prison sentence this Friday at the Rennes Criminal Court. He could face seven years in prison. On June 18, two young men on an electric scooter knocked down a 51-year-old woman in downtown Rennes, late in the afternoon, on a sidewalk that was therefore closed to traffic. She was hit in the back at just over 20 km/h and died as a result of the violent impact on June 24, after sustaining secondary injuries.
Lambourde, 18, under professional contract until 2026 and international U18, was the driver of the scooter he had borrowed from his father and which was not insured. In court, he explained that it was the first time he had used it that day, without knowing that he could not drive it with a passenger.
Serious imprudence
The alcohol and drug tests were negative. This Friday afternoon, under the eyes of his teammate Lorenz Assignon, Lambourde generally admitted his imprudence and “deeply apologized” to the victim’s family for this tragedy.
At the end of the hearing, the public prosecutor requested a two-year suspended prison sentence and a revocation of the driving license with a ban on retaking it for one year, and after deliberation, the presiding judge handed down a two-year suspended prison sentence. The court also granted the request for exemption from mentioning this conviction on bulletin number 2 of his criminal record. Another civil trial will be held on October 10, 2025 to determine compensation.
