A car driver had taken the wrong exit and was backtracking. A German family’s car crashed into the vehicle.

Two small children and their parents were injured in a wrong-way driver accident on the Tauern Autobahn (A10) near Bischofshofen im Pongau on Saturday. A 43-year-old had taken the wrong exit and was pushing back towards the road. The following family of four crashed their car onto the back. All four inmates were taken to the hospital by ambulance, the police reported on Sunday.

It was not initially known how seriously the family from Bremen, Germany, was injured. The 51-year-old father tried to avoid the crash by emergency braking. An alcohol test on both drivers was negative. The wrong-way driver, a 43-year-old from Poland, was taken to hospital for observation, the police said. While the accident was being recorded and the clean-up work was taking place, all three lanes of the motorway in the direction of Villach were closed.
