IAEA extends inspection schedule by 1-2 days to assess situation
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has decided to station two inspectors at the Zaporiza nuclear power plant in Ukraine, a Russian diplomatic official said on the 2nd (local time).
Russian ambassador to Vienna, Austria, where the IAEA headquarters is located, Mikhail Ulyanov, told Sputnik News on the same day that two of the IAEA inspectors have decided to remain at the Zaporiza nuclear power plant.
“We welcome this decision, as it requires the presence of an international organization to dispel a lot of speculation regarding the situation at nuclear power plants,” he added.
IAEA Secretary-General Rafael Grossi said the inspectors had initially decided to stay at the Zaporiza nuclear power plant until the 3rd of this month, but decided to extend the stay by a day or two, TASS news agency reported.
“A group of experts will remain on site until the 4th or 5th of this month to assess the situation,” Grosi said.
He also explained, “The inspection team will present a number of questions and the results of initial observations and evaluations.
Regarding the presence of the inspectors, he repeatedly said, “We will have IAEA experts stay stationed at the nuclear power plant to carry out their missions,” but he did not give more specific comments.
According to the IAEA, Secretary-General Grosi will hold a press conference at Vienna Airport at 6 pm GMT on the same day to explain the situation and future plans.
The IAEA inspectors arrived at the Japorija nuclear power plant the day before and checked the damage situation and safety measures at the site, and continued their mission for the second day.
After visiting the site on the first day of the Japoriza Temple, Secretary-General Grosi said, “It is clear that the physical integrity of the nuclear power plant has been damaged several times.
He also emphasized his willingness to stay, saying, “The inspectors will not leave the nuclear power plant.”
