two railway workers who were working on the tracks hit by a train, one is dead and the other is seriously injured

Infrabel communicated the information to VTM news. A collision between a train and two people occurred last night around midnight, near Wetteren station. Two workers were knocked down by a passing train. One man was killed instantly, another was seriously injured.

An investigation is opened to determine the circumstances of the tragedy. According to HLN, it would be a communication error. The two workers would have started work earlier than expected on a track that was supposed to be closed.

The train involved is that of the Brussels-Bruges line. Forty passengers were on board. They were disembarked from the train and taken by bus to their destination or another station. The three other workers who were at the scene of the accident are receiving psychological support and have been questioned by the labor auditor.

“We extend our condolences to the colleagues, family and friends of the victims,” said Thomas Baeken, spokesman for Infrabel. “We are a big family of railway workers, it should never have happened. »

The workers had to work on a signaling system at Wetteren station. “A working window had been planned from 00:40 to 04:20,” Baeken explained. The investigation will have to determine why the workers, who were employed by a subcontractor of a contractor of TUC Rail, a subsidiary of Infrabel, started work in advance.
