Two people arrested after demonstrations in front of Equinor’s garden party

Two people arrested after demonstrations in front of Equinor’s garden party

The guests to the exclusive party were greeted with slogans and posters from the activist group, writes Stavanger Aftenblad. Stavanger mayor Sissel Knutsen Hegdal was pushed into the bushes when she arrived at the party.

Operations manager Erik Rasmussen in the Sørvest police district confirms that two people have been arrested after the demonstrations.

– The reason behind the arrest is that they have illegally entered an area where they do not have access, says Rasmussen to NTB.

Thunberg participated

The demonstrators brought Swedish Greta Thunberg to the action. XR itself reports that Thunberg herself was arrested, but the two arrested were men in their 30s and 40s, says the operations manager.

Rasmussen says that several other people were expelled from the place. The two arrested will be reported.

He says that the police task leader reports on an inspection at the site shortly after 9 p.m., and that the party goes on.

– Disgusting

– That Equinor invites to celebrate the destruction they are guilty of is disgusting, says Thunberg in a statement conveyed by XR.

Equinor warned its guests about the protesters and wrote that they had implemented security measures.

– Show the protesters respect and avoid entering into unnecessary discussions, was among the advice the company gave to the invitees. Sørvest police district will have people present during the party.

– There is freedom of speech in Norway, and everyone should be able to express their opinion, but it is our job to ensure the safety of the guests, Equinor spokesperson Ellen Maria Skjelsbæk told Aftenbladet ahead of the event.
