Two more districts of Lima declare an emergency due to an increase in extortion

This was expressed by the Minister of the Interior, Juan José Santiváñez.

Santiváñez explained that the decision to declare the 14 districts an emergency is due to a request from the National Police, motivated by the “increase in crime” in those areas and the possibility that these crimes will extend to the neighboring districts.

Increase in extortion worsens transport strike

The minister stated in an interview with the RPP radio station that the issue here is a fight against extortion and hitmen, a day after the transport strike, which was caused by the wave of extortion that has resulted in the death of several drivers. in recent weeks.

The Minister of the Interior indicated that the Government is considering the implementation of a curfew in the districts that have been declared in emergency, since this measure would imply the suspension of certain constitutional rights.

Santiváñez stated that they cannot afford to fail in the fight against these crimes, and added that “if that did not happen, we would have to consider stepping aside,” in response to the possibility of resigning from his position.
