Two more dead found in the sailboat that sank off Sicily

The head of the civil defense on the Italian island, Salvatore Cocina, confirms the discovery to the AP news agency.

Earlier on Wednesday, two dead were brought ashore. Thus, it appears that a total of five victims have been found after the sinking.

The boat capsized and sank in a terrific storm on the night of Monday. 15 of the 22 on board were rescued alive.

The divers have not released the names or gender of the two dead who were brought ashore on Wednesday, but a source told Reuters that one of the dead is “a man with a powerful build”.

Many nationalities

The luxury yacht Bayesian sank not far from Palermo. The survivors were quickly transported to Porticello, near the Sicilian regional capital.

The boat sailed under the British flag, and there were most Britons on board. But passengers and crew from New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Antigua, France, Germany, Myanmar and the Netherlands were also on board.

The first person to be found dead was the cook on board. He was found on Monday, a few hours after the sinking.

The identity of the other four has not yet been officially confirmed.

Well-known IT billionaire

Two of the missing passengers are British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Lynch, who has been called Britain’s tech king, was recently acquitted in a trial in San Francisco over Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company Autonomy Corp.

One of the managers of the major bank Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy are also among the missing, according to British media.

Bayesian was a very luxurious sailing boat that was a whopping 56 meters long. The British-registered vessel was found at a depth of 50 metres.

According to the Italian civil defense, the sailboat was probably hit by a cloud pump before it went down. Cloud pumps occur over water and are similar to tornadoes.
