The US Coast Guard rescued two teenagers on a mountain side in Lane County, Oregon, following spotting the huge ‘SOS’ sign they made in the snow.

The young men, both 19 years old, went camping in the Swastika Mountain area on Christmas Day, but on December 29 they had not returned home as planned. Authorities reported them missing on New Year’s Eve.

Due to heavy snowfall in the area, the county Sheriff’s Department requested assistance from the Coast Guard. With the help of a helicopter, rescuers were finally able to locate the youths thanks to the huge ‘SOS’ message they had written on the snow. None of the teens were injured.

“These young people did a lot of good things to give themselves the best chance of being rescued,” said Lt. Maggie Champin, commander of Aircraft MH-65, by describing the correct actions of adolescents: leave the sign, stay close to your vehicle and stay close to the main forest roads.
