In a joint operation, the National Police captured two men in the Las Playas de Belén neighborhood, in Medellín, accused of kidnapping y qualified theft. The suspects, aged 30 and 32, were arrested when they were trying to receive a sum of money as a ransom for the release of one of their victims. The capture occurred in flagrante delicto, after the victim’s relatives, initially willing to pay the ransom, decided to report the situation to the authorities.
The two men entered the home of a family in the Las Playas neighborhood. According to the authorities, the kidnappers arrived armed, presumably with pistols, and began to intimidate the inhabitants of the house, demanding a millionaire sum as part of a debt conflict. Not receiving the money they demanded, the criminals chose to steal valuable assets of the residence, which were valued at about 5 million pesos.
The situation escalated quickly when one of the family members was kidnapped by the aggressors. Demanding a ransom of 10 million pesos, the kidnappers held the victim while his relatives left the house to “get” the money. However, under pressure and concern for the safety of their loved one, they decided to alert the police instead of complying with the criminals’ demands.
Thanks to one quick intervention of the authorities, the criminals were intercepted when they were trying to receive the ransom money at a previously agreed upon point. The capture was carried out by units of the Medellín Metropolitan Policewho managed to identify the suspects and arrest them on the spot.
During the process of judicializationthe detainees tried to bribe the officers by offering them a sum of money to be released. This additional action gave rise to an accusation for the crime of briberywhich was added to the charges of kidnapping and qualified robbery that they already faced. Despite being arrested in flagrante delicto, the kidnappers were not accused of illegally carrying firearms, since they were not in possession of the pistols with which they had threatened the victims at the time of arrest.
The detainees, identified as men with criminal records related to the robo and the extortionwere presented to the Attorney General’s Office, which advanced their judicial process. The authorities have highlighted the speed and effectiveness of the police response in this case, which allowed the victim to be released safely, without confrontations or serious incidents.
This case highlights the growing concern about crimes of kidnapping y extortion in various areas of Medellín and other cities in Colombia. Although the authorities have intensified operations against these criminal practices, they continue to be a major concern for citizen security. The quick action of the police in this case has been highlighted by area residents, who applauded the efficiency of the security forces.
Investigators are now working to clarify whether the detainees were part of a larger criminal organization or whether they acted in a independent. Furthermore, the authorities do not rule out that this type of crime may have connections with other criminal gangs dedicated to drug trafficking and the extortionwhich operate in the region.
