Two hours of blackouts for Havana due to “national emergency”

Authorities from the Cuban capital’s Electric Union reported on Wednesday that there will be two hours of blackouts in Havana due to a “national emergency” and as “solidarity” with the provinces in the interior, which have suffered up to 10 hours of power outages.

The Havana Electric Company announced that two-hour power cuts will begin this week, a measure that highlights the government’s difficulties in managing the current energy crisis, although they promised that the summer in Cuba would not have major blackouts.

In a statement on Facebook, the company reported that the service will be affected in the capital due to a generation deficit in the National Electric System, but only for two hours of blackouts in Havana. Something that is very far from the reality of the rest of the provinces of the country.

As reported, customers associated with Blocks #1 and #2 will experience power outages between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., while Blocks #3 and #4 will experience interruptions between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The company also asked the population to implement energy saving measures to reduce consumption, avoid overloads in the electrical networks and minimize service interruptions. The power outages will only last two hours and during daylight hours.

The situation of blackouts in Cuba has worsened in recent days. For this Thursday, the Cuban Electric Union (UNE) anticipated that the impact during peak hours would reach a record of 1,305 MW of blackouts, the highest figure recorded so far this summer and one of the worst this year.

As always, the disruption had to be overcome during peak hours. In addition to the fuel shortage, several thermoelectric plants were out of service due to technical problems and would remain so at least until the beginning of next week.
