Two firefighters killed in Ngau Tau Kok mini warehouse fire

In 2016, a fourth-level fire broke out in the Shichang mini warehouse in Taoda Industrial Village, Niutoujiao, and senior fire chief Zhang Yaosheng and fire brigade chief Xu Zhijie were killed. After more than eight months of inquiries, the Coroner’s Court today (10th) ruled that the two deceased died unfortunately.

The magistrate ruled that between 7:02 pm and 8:06 pm on June 21, 2016, Zhang Yaosheng had suffered extensive burns and inhaled concentrations of fire in a Class 3 fire extinguishing operation in the Shichang mini warehouse on the 3rd floor of Amoy Industrial Estate. Yan was injured and died heroically on the same day. At regarding 6:35 p.m. on the 23rd of the same year, Xu Zhijie was ordered to enter the same location to carry out level 4 fire blasting and fire-fighting operations. He was injured due to high temperature and heatstroke and died heroically on the same day.

The fire was only put out at 11:00 pm on June 25. The then Director of Fire Services, Li Wenxuan, once pointed out that there were more than 200 small warehouses at the scene of the fire, and firefighters had to blast them open one by one. Difficulty in fire fighting. In the same year, the government posthumously awarded the highest-level Gold Medal of Valor to the two deceased, praising them for entering the fire without fear of danger, reflecting their heroic, fearless and selfless noble sentiments.
