Four of the 16 Chilean regions were declared on Monday as disaster areas due to the damage caused by the intense rains that affected the center-south of the country and left a partial balance of two deaths and more than 30,000 isolated people.

The rainfall began over the weekend and only gave a breather in the center of the country, where the Chilean capital is located, while in the south the rainfall in the high mountains increased the flow of rivers, several of which overflowed, flooding fields, homes and isolating countless rural sectors.

President Gabriel Boric, who is in Maule, one of the regions most affected by the rains – 250 kilometers from the Chilean capital – confirmed the death of two people over the weekend in the Biobío region, 550 kilometers to the south: a firefighter who drowned while trying to rescue a lamb from a river and a driver who died when a tree fell on his vehicle.
