Two deaths and 24 new cases in the last week

At the same time, there were 24 new cases of the West Nile virus as reported by the National Public Health Organization (EODY) in the weekly report of epidemiological surveillance of the infection.

In more detail, from the beginning of the period 2024, until 21/08/2024, a total of 100 domestic cases of infection caused by the West Nile virus in Greece have been diagnosed and investigated, of which 76 cases presented manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and 24 cases had mild/no CNS manifestations.

During the last week, 24 new domestic cases were diagnosed and reported. Three imported cases of the infection have also been recorded in patients who were exposed to another country abroad, specifically in Albania, which are not included in the further analysis.

A total of 12 deaths have been recorded in patients infected with the virus, aged over 60 years (median age of deceased = 83 years, range 61 – 92 years), of which 2 were recorded in the last week, according to the EODY.

However, EODY emphasizes that the majority of people infected with the virus (75-80%) remain asymptomatic. People over the age of 50 and those with immunosuppression or chronic underlying diseases are more likely than the rest of the population to develop severe disease.
