A massive Halloween celebration in downtown Orlando, Florida, turned tragic early Friday morning when a shooting left two people dead and six injured. Orlando police arrested a 17-year-old boy, who is the only suspect identified so far.
Thousands of people celebrated in downtown Orlando
Around 1:00 am, while thousands of people, dressed for the occasion, filled the streets of downtown Orlando, gunshots were heard, spreading panic among the crowd. At first, many attendees thought the sounds were coming from music, but the situation quickly became alarming as people began to seek shelter.
Police, who were in the area to ensure the safety of the event, responded immediately. However, the chaos intensified when a second burst of gunfire erupted, at which point officers managed to apprehend the alleged attacker.
Two dead and six injured in stable condition
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith reported that after the shooting, two people died from gunshot wounds and six more were taken to a hospital. The ages of the injured range between 19 and 39 years old, and they are currently in stable condition.
Smith said the 17-year-old suspect was arrested and his motive is still unknown. However, he mentioned that detectives are questioning the young man to obtain more details about the attack. “Whatever his intention was, he was willing to shoot regardless of the consequences,” said the police chief.
Videos of witnesses and statements of those present
Several witnesses who were in nearby bars captured the moment on video. Genaro, who recorded from the rooftop of a store, described the chaos experienced: “Everything happened very quickly. We heard gunshots and everyone fell to the ground. When we got up, it was already over. From above, we saw people bleeding on the ground.” Katja Marie Penno, another witness, said the shooting began near a fast food establishment downtown. According to her, after the first burst of gunshots, they heard five to six more gunshots.
Investigation underway and possible accusation as an adult
Eric Smith confirmed that a gun was recovered at the scene and ruled out the involvement of other suspects. On Halloween night, more than 100 officers patrolled a crowd estimated to be between 50,000 and 100,000 people. Florida State Attorney Andrew Baine commented that the possibility of charging the suspect as an adult is being evaluated, although he clarified that they will wait for the results of the police investigation to make a decision.
Orlando authorities continue to investigate this tragic incident, which has shocked the community and left those attending this annual celebration in the city center in suspense.
