Two dead and several injured in train crash in Egypt

Two people died and several others were injured in a train accident in Egypt. The Egyptian Ministry of Health said two people died in the accident in Kaliub, north of the capital Cairo. The condition of the injured is stable. The ministry had previously spoken of one fatality and 16 injuries, six of whom had already been discharged home following their treatment.

According to the Egyptian Railways Authority, the accident happened when a passenger train ignored a stop signal entering Kaliub station. This led to the derailment of the locomotive and the first wagon. Pictures from the scene of the accident showed that a crane was brought there to recover the fallen parts of the train.

Fatal accidents are common in Egypt, both on the rails and on the roads. In April 2021, Minister of Transport Kamel el-Wasir fired the head of the railway authority shortly following a train accident that killed 23 people.
