Two people died and 28 were injured in a mass shooting this Sunday morning in the US city of Baltimore, authorities reported.

Police received multiple calls regarding a shooting at a block party shortly following midnight in a southern neighborhood of this city in the eastern US state of Maryland, the local police chief said at a news conference.

“When officers arrived, we identified several victims with gunshot wounds,” said Deputy Richard Worley.

An adult female, whose name was not yet known, was found dead at the scene, nine victims were transported to nearby hospitals and all but one were released, the sheriff said.

Worley added that 20 more wounded were transferred to other hospitals in the area, the AFP news agency reported.

Three people suffered serious injuries, the commissioner said.

The other deceased victim was also an adult, whose name was also not immediately known.

The sheriff said they were trying to identify a suspect and determine the motive for the shooting.

“It’s an absolute tragedy that didn’t have to happen,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at the news conference.

“I want those responsible to hear me clearly: We are not going to stop until we find them,” Scott warned, adding: “I hope that with every breath you take you think regarding the lives that were taken today.”

The United States has the highest rate of deaths from firearms of all developed countries, with a figure of 20,200 deaths in 2022, according to the Violence Archive organization.

The problem is attributed to the free carrying of weapons protected by the national Constitution.
