Two coffees and water for $88: many tourists witness huge prices in Italy

Tourists had a bad surprise when they received their bill following ordering two coffees and two bottles of water in their hotel in Sardinia when the amount was 60 euros ($88 Canadian).

The Cervo hotel would have justified this price by mentioning to CNN that it is high because of the view of the luxury yachts as well as the port that its customers can see from its terrace.

The couple in question are not the only ones to have been victims of exorbitant prices in Italy since the beginning of the summer, when several stories of the genre have been reported in various media, whether it is a price of 2$ to cut a sandwich in half or $2 to warm up a bottle of milk.

The organization Consumerism No Profit reports a 130% increase in prices in tourist areas of the country.

Despite these increases, Italy’s Ministry of Tourism predicts that 68 million tourists will visit the country this summer.

In an interview with CNN, the Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanche, indicates that this year is in a way “year zero” following the restrictions of the pandemic.

“I wouldn’t call it a failure, but not a success either,” she says. We can finally start talking regarding tourism once more and plan the next steps.”

Luxury tourism is still popular as 11.7 million people plan to stay in a 5-star hotel in Italy this summer according to its ministry.
