the elected governor Rolando Figueroa wanted to be received yesterday as number one strategist in the province, but he did not reach. This does not mean that it has less merit: it still has to savor the triumph over 60 years of uninterrupted hegemony of the MPN in the government of Neuquén, but it tried and might not defeat the second “power family”as he defines it, that of the Rioseco in Cutral Co.
Yesterday was his final test for finish disarming with his refoundational epic the status quo of the provincea good part of them built in the last decades by Jorge Sapag, and found a sweeping victory for Ramón, the already twice mayor, over his candidate Rubén “Ojito” García. The family that emerged in the heat of discontent and the towns in the 90s will extend its power in the main city of the oil region for 20 years.
Cutral Co and Neuquén will be, then, the two municipalities that will make a kind of counterpower to the governor-elect when the new terms begin, on December 10. Nothing new under the sun. This was how the last governments of the MPN managed, with the exception of the last one of Omar Gutiérrez: but before it was with the capital in the hands of Horacio “Pechi” Quiroga, now under the command of Mariano Gaidopotential candidate for 2027.
Figueroa did not leave empty-handed yesterday either and managed to wrest another mayorship from the MPN with the triumph of Claudio Larraza in Plaza Huincul. The provincial party took little care in accompanying the mayor who, months ago, had been celebrated for “a rabbit in the galley” for agreeing with his neighbor from Cutral Co to hold the elections in both cities simultaneously.
It was January. Still nobody thought that a reset in the electoral system and powers of the province were possible.
