Two researchers from the National University of Quilmes and ConicetYamila Santillán and Lorena Rojas, developed a method to decontaminate water and food containing pesticides and glyphosate. Lorena Rojas, Project Director, spoke with Radio Universidad de La Plata to point out the importance of the development of this product and how it impacts people’s lives.
“During the last few years we have worked on the development of the project, Now comes the stage of producing and distributing in different areas of our country,” assured the Director of the UNQ Degree in Biotechnology to the university environment.
It is the application of a organic product made with enzymatic systems through the technique called “bioremediation” which causes the pesticides that exist in crops to degrade naturally.
He product has not yet left the laboratory and the researchers hope that through a public-private partnership at the national level to reach as many producers and people as possible.
“All this research was developed with funding from the National University of Quilmes along with other public organizations but also there was collaboration from some private especially in the setup and application tests,” Rojas added in communication with Radio Universidad de la Plata.
Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide in our country although its incorrect use can be highly harmful. for the environment and society. In fact, Misiones recently approved a rule to ban the product from the province by 2025 and focus on the application of organic pesticides.
Therefore, the Biological remediation is a mechanism that allows using fungi, bacteria and plants to convert pesticides into microorganisms that are not toxic to everyday foods. that Argentines consume or for the soil.
