At least 9 soldiers were killed when two Black Hawk helicopters collided in the US state of Kentucky.
According to the news agency AFP, these helicopters belonged to the 101st Airborne Division, whose spokesman, Lt. Col. Anthony Hoefler, said that nine soldiers were killed in the accident.
The crash happened at 10 p.m. Wednesday in Trigg County, Kentucky, northwest of Fort Campbell.
The crew members aboard the two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters were on a routine training mission when the accident occurred.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear tweeted that he will travel to Fort Campbell to express solidarity with the crew and their families following last night’s tragic accident.
Earlier in his tweet, the Governor of Kentucky said that we are getting some bad news from Fort Campbell and initial reports are that the helicopter has been destroyed resulting in loss of life.
The HH-60 Blackhawk helicopter is used for a variety of military operations, including air operations and medical aid delivery.
Two years ago, a similar incident took place when a US Army helicopter crashed in Western New York, killing 3 US soldiers.
