The teenagers, now 13, are the youngest to be convicted of manslaughter in Britain since the two 10-year-olds who killed toddler James Bulger in 1993 in a case that shocked the country and the world.
The victim of last year’s attack, Sean Sissahai, was stabbed in the back, arms and head in a Wolverhampton park last November. The court was told that the wound to his back was 23cm deep, as the knife went through his lungs and heart.
“The facts of this case are appalling and shocking,” Judge Amanda Tipples commented. “I am certain, from the nature of the injuries, that the defendants intended to kill Sean, they acted in concert to do so, although I cannot be certain who delivered the fatal blow. It was an attack that happened spontaneously, it was not premeditated,” he added.
The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were found guilty of manslaughter in June after a 20-day trial.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is a former prosecutor, commented that he was deeply shocked by the case. “It is hard to believe that 12-year-olds can commit such a violent murder. Small children should not have access to knives. We have to face this crisis head on,” he said in a post on the X platform.
Sisahai, originally from Anguilla, was in Britain for eye surgery and studies. His mother described him as “generous and compassionate”.
One of the boys bought the machete from a friend for £40 and hid it under his bed. On the day of the murder, he came home from school, changed clothes and went to meet the other child, taking the knife with him. After attacking Sisahai, who had asked them to leave a bench, the boys left. The former cleaned the machete with bleach and put it back under his bed.
