Twitter’s Trust and Safety Executive Ella Irwin Resigns Amidst Controversy: Latest Update

2023-06-02 09:23:55

Ella Irwin, one of the main executives of Twitter, has announced that she has resigned from the social network, confirming information from the American magazine Fortune. Head of Twitter’s trust and safety team, Ms.me Irwin oversaw the social network’s moderation policies and any topics related to harassment, online hate, misinformation or spam.

Arrived in the company last August, a few months before the effective takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk, in October, Ella Irwin had been appointed to her last position following the resignation of Yoel Roth, the former head of “trust and security”, in November. She was considered one of the members of Elon Musk’s close guard within the social network.

Strong pressure on the company from European regulators

Mr. Musk has made a relaxation of the rules of moderation one of the main axes of his policy at the head of Twitter. Since taking over the company, he has ended many rules designed to protect users, such as those aimed at limiting medical misinformation, and reactivated the accounts of many previously banned people, including several conspiracy and neo-Nazi figures.

The announcement of the resignation of Mr.me Irwin comes a week following Twitter opted out of the European Code of Conduct Against Online Disinformation, and as the company must be checked by European regulators during June – a new European regulation governing social networks, the DMA, will gradually come into force this summer. It also took place two weeks following Linda Yaccarino took over as Twitter’s chief executive – Elon Musk, who until recently held all the CEO responsibilities, remains the company’s chairman.
