Social networking and microblogging website Twitter has quietly shut down millions of accounts by shutting down its mobile tweeting service.

The social networking website used to send tweets of accounts followed via SMS to users around the world from the number 40404.

The company had announced in September last year that the service has been discontinued in most countries, while mobile messaging will be discontinued in the remaining countries soon.

In a statement issued by Twitter, it has been stated that the final decision to stop the SMS service was made keeping in mind the security of user accounts as it could be exploited by hackers and misuse of information of millions of users.

The company explained that despite the shutdown of the SMS service, users will still receive important messages on mobiles such as account logins, among others.

Accounts of millions of Twitter users using the SMS service were also suspended, Twitter said, all of which were created under 40404.

A company spokesperson told the Mashable site that accounts created through the Twitter SMS service were deleted because their details, such as phone numbers, or email addresses, were not available.

A Twitter spokesperson said that we deleted the accounts that posed risks, another important thing is that they no longer support the technology, deleting accounts may reduce the followers of some users.
