If you couldn’t check Twitter this Saturday, July 1, you weren’t alone. Internet users initially believed that it was a technical problem. Unable to retrieve tweets at this time”or “rate limit exceeded”, could we read in particular when trying to access tweets or profiles. The hashtag #TwitterDown (“Twitter down”) was among the most relayed on the platform in France.

The website Downdetector, which detects incidents on the Internet, identified on July 1 at 5 p.m. nearly 3,000 reports of Internet users having a problem accessing Twitter from France. Internet users have reported slow loading of the news feed or the appearance of the message “An error has occurred”, which prevents the display of tweets or profiles.

Internet users around the world have been affected by these error messages. Thus, Downdetector identified thousands of reports on July 1 in the United States, the United Kingdom, as well as in many other countries.

The social network has not officially communicated on the cause of these disturbances, but its boss Elon Musk wrote on Twitter that “Limits” had been temporarily put in place to deal with “extreme levels of data recovery and system manipulation”. He specifies that the accounts “verified” (actually, those who have subscribed to the paid Twitter Blue subscription) can read 6,000 messages per day, while others can only view 600 messages per day.
