Billionaire Elon Musk began laying off additional staff at Twitter’s sales division late Wednesday. The company’s workforce has already shrunk significantly with layoffs and resignations.
Last week, Mr. Musk gave employees an ultimatum: either accept a “hardcore” work environment with long hours, or quit. Sales employees were more supportive of Musk’s vision than tech employees, according to people familiar with the matter. Many people are leaving the tech sector.
Musk is trying to balance the remaining workforce with additional cuts, said the people, who asked not to be identified because it was an internal decision. Two people familiar with the matter said some of the cuts were notified on Monday, but the final size of the cuts was unclear. The platformer earlier reported on the start of additional cuts.
Twitter’s sales team held an all-hands meeting on Monday with Musk and the new head of the department, Chris Reedy, but didn’t mention the layoffs, two people said.
Twitter currently has 2,750 employees, although some resignations and layoffs may still not be counted, one of the people said. Before Musk’s takeover, it had just over 7,000.
