Twitter knew several security vulnerabilities. One of them has also made private tweets public. What if Elon Musk just launched an encrypted messaging optionthis one requires a Twitter Blue subscription, and is therefore payable. If this possibility had been implemented earlier, she might have avoided the lawsuit Twitter now faces…
The plaintiff, Areej al-Sadhan, thus filed the complaint on her behalf and on behalf of her brother. The latter was sentenced to 20 years in prison for supporting terrorism. And according to her, Twitter would be partly responsible for this arrest. She says: “Twitter leaked my brother’s credentials to the government of Saudi Arabia, which is a flagrant violation of its terms of use”
Areej al-Sadhan added: “That endangers all Twitter users. As a result, Saudi Arabia has kidnapped, tortured, imprisoned and – through a show trial – sentenced my brother to 20 years in prison, simply for criticizing the Saudi repression on his Twitter account“.
Abouammo and another former Twitter employee named Ali Alzabarah accessed confidential data of Twitter users 30,892 times in 2015, according to the lawsuit. They then reportedly gave Saudi Arabia credentials for thousands of Twitter user accounts. This data includes names, dates of birth, device identifiers, phone numbers, as well as IP addresses.
The lawsuit also says US intelligence agencies tipped off Twitter, stating that the person concerned had given Saudi Arabia information about the users at the end of 2015. Jack Dorsey, who was then the CEO of Twitter, is said to have even met Mohammed bin Salman “despite the fact that he was fully aware of the malign activities and various crimes of Saudi Arabia“, according to the complaint.
