New step in the recovery of the social network. Twitter is temporarily restricting the reading of messages on its platform, its president, Elon Musk, announced in a tweet posted on Saturday July 1. A decision taken to contain the massive use of social network data by third parties, in particular to feed artificial intelligence models. The goal is to “address extreme levels of data collection and system manipulation,” said the billionaire.
Since this weekend, access to the social network is limited: only account holders can access tweets. Concretely, the platform caps reading at 10,000 tweets per day for verified accounts (paying), 1,000 for unverified and 500 for new unverified accounts. Ceilings which had first been announced lower (respectively 6,000, 600 and 300), then raised during the day on Saturday.
Generative AI companies need to collect massive amounts of data to train their models. To develop models capable of responding in the same way as a human, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT for example, these companies need to have examples of conversation, which are very present on Twitter.
“A good deed for everyone”
“Hundreds of organizations (maybe more) were gleaning data from Twitter very aggressively, to the point that it disrupted ordinary use” by Internet users, said the billionaire, himself at the head of X. AI, an artificial intelligence startup. And to add: “It’s a bit frustrating to have to urgently add a large number of servers just to justify the indecent valuation of certain AI start-ups. »
Twitter is not the only network to have to deal with increased use of its content by artificial intelligence companies. In mid-June, the Reddit platform, which also hosts many discussions between Internet users, decided to increase its prices for access to its API (application programming interface) from July 1. A choice that led some of its users to start a “strike”.
On the night of Saturday to Sunday, Elon Musk gave another reason for the access restrictions, this time more ironic: “The reason I set a view limit is that we are all addicted to Twitter and that we have to get out. I’m doing a good deed for the world here. »
