Twitchhas announced that it will terminate Twitch services in South Korea as of February 27, 2024 (Korean time). The company cited increased operating costs as the main reason for its withdrawal.
The company has implemented various cost-cutting measures to continue its service in South Korea, such as streaming in a P2P model and limiting image quality to a maximum of 720p, but network fees in South Korea are regarding 10 times higher than in other countries. Due to the high cost, the company reportedly recorded a large loss in South Korea and decided to withdraw from the business.
Starting February 27th, streamers who choose South Korea as their country of residence will no longer be able to monetize, and viewers in that country will not be able to make purchases on Twitch. For users outside of Japan, we are offering refunds for subscriptions to Korean Twitch streamers until March 27, 2024.
The company will support Korean Twitch streamers in migrating to other live streaming services. Company CEO Dan Clancy said the withdrawal was a unique and difficult decision.
