With signs of Malayalam cinema coming back in the second quarter of the year, theaters are hoping for more films. In the six months from January to June, 70 of the 76 films released in theaters were financial failures. However, five of the thirty films released in July and August created a huge movement in the theatres. The owners are hoping that the theaters will return to their former glory during Onam, which will see the release of big star films.

Onam films will start arriving from the first Friday of September. Mohanlal’s Monster, Prithviraj starrer Gold, Nivin Pauly’s Padavet, Kunchacko Boban’s Ott, Vinayan’s 19th Century, Bijumenon’s Eru Dumbang Thal, Basil Joseph starrer Paltu Janwar are the major films coming up for Onam. Mammootty has no Onam release this time. K Vijayakumar, General Secretary of Fiokin, an association of theater owners, said that the revival in theaters in July and August is expected to reach a higher level with Onam.

Bhishmaparvam, Hridiya, Janaganamana, CBI-5, Joe and Joe and Super Sharanya survived the first six months till June. Foreign language films like KGF2, RRR and Vikram also created a stir. In the second quarter, July releases showed a change in theaters. Prithviraj’s Tiger, Fahadh Faasil’s Malayankunju, Nivin Pauly’s Mahaveeryar and Sureshgopi’s Pappan were box office hits. Kunchacko Boban’s Nna Than Kes Kod and Tovino’s Thallumala became waves in August.

Direct OTT Malayalam releases have also declined significantly in the second half. In the first six months, regarding 30 films came directly to OTT. In the past 50 days, 10 Malayalam films have reached this category. Registrations of new titles targeted for OTT release have also declined. For the films Paka and Aavasavyuham to become waves in OTT.

According to Fiokin, the popularity of OTT and the lack of quality of films have kept the audience away from the theatre. Many producers have moved to OTT aiming at a guaranteed minimum financial gain. However, OTT platforms brought in self-regulation to stem the tide. Making provision for OTT release of theatrical films also led to the change.
