THE ESSENTIAL
- Sophie developed kidney cancer when she was 10 years old. Throughout her illness, her twin sister Megan showed symptoms but did not have a tumour.
- All the examinations carried out on Megan during the last 6 years, never discovered the slightest health problem. For doctors, his disorders are a “twin thing”.
- Sophie relapsed once more. His family has launched a kitty to finance a last-ditch operation.
The special bond that unites identical twins is difficult to explain. The story of twins Sophie and Megan, shared by the Independent newspaper, adds a stone to the mystery. Both sisters have symptoms of kidney cancer while only one has a tumour.
Kidney cancer: the two twin sisters have symptoms
In 2017, 10-year-old Sophie Walker began to experience stomach and back pain, paleness, and weight loss. Doctors discovered she had Wilms tumor, a type of kidney cancer. She quickly underwent four weeks of chemotherapy.
Over the next five years, the young Scotswoman went through several treatments, remissions and relapses. Throughout this period, her twin sister Megan had the same symptoms as her. Their mother, Rebecca Walker, told the British newspaper: “When Sophie was first diagnosed, Megan had all the symptoms. People noticed how sick she looked all the time – she was even paler than her sister”.
Examinations were carried out on Megan. “Every test possible and imaginable has been carried out, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with her. It’s really weird”says the mother.

“Doctors tell me it’s just a twin thing”
In 2023, Sophie, now 16, was diagnosed with cancer in her spine. Megan did an MRI to check once more that she hadn’t developed a tumor herself. “Nothing has appeared, there is absolutely nothing wrong with her”explains Rebecca Walker.
“Doctors tell me it’s just a ‘twin thing’ – which I find totally bizarre. I’ve never heard of identical twins getting sick at the same time, when one isn’t even sick himself, confides the mother of the two teenagers.
The prognosis given to Sophie is grim. According to the doctors, the only solution might be an operation carried out by specialists in New York. However, it turns out to be particularly expensive. The girl’s family has therefore launched a kitty on GoFundMe to try to raise the necessary funds.
