Welcome to the 244th episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
This week, we run through the latest industry headlines (The Office!) and look back on the Emmy winners and the Fox telecast before we welcome BFF of the 5, Alan Sepinwall, joins us for a Season in Review segment.
Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:
1. Headlines
Young Sheldon, The White Lotus, Nathan Lane, Amazon’s faith investment, Schmigadoon, Rap Sh!t and a Chuck E. Cheese reality show (yes, really) highlight the week’s top industry headlines.
2. Emmy winners
Was it predictable that The Bear, Succession and Beef swept the Emmys? Yes, but there were some surprising winners and hey, let’s call this what it is: an appetizer for September’s 76th annual Primetime Emmys.
3. Emmy telecast
Reunions! A host who held his own! Moving and memorable speeches! We look at what worked — a lot! — and the few things that didn’t during the Fox telecast. Plus Dan and I kindly suggest the Emmys continue to inject nostalgia into the ceremony every year.
4. Season in Review
Outside of the Emmys, this week was punctuated by the finales of some prestige programs. Rolling Stone chief TV critic Alan Sepinwall joins us for — spoiler alert! — a look back at the seasons of FX’s FargoApple’s For All Mankind and Showtime’s The Curse.
5. Critic’s Corner
As usual, we end with Dan’s thoughts on this week’s new and returning series. In this episode, he weighs in on Amazon’s Hazbin Hotel and Hulu’s Only Murders on the Boat Death and Other Details.
Hear it all now on TV’s Top 5. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to never miss an episode. (Reviews welcome!) You can also email us with any topics or Mailbag questions you’d like addressed in future episodes at [email protected].
