Popular TV host Phil Donahue has died at the age of 88.

He was known for his program “The Phil Donahue Show” and has received many awards for his efforts.

Donahue died at his home surrounded by his family.

The popular TV presenter Phil Donahue passed away Sunday evening after a long illness, his family announced.

Phillip John Donahue was an American media personality, journalist, author, film producer and the creator and host of “The Phil Donahue Show”.

The journalist was a pioneer in the modern format of topical talk shows with a focus on social issues and audience participation. His program became one of the most influential of its time, the newspaper writes Today.

Donahue died at his home surrounded by his family, including his wife of 44 years, Marlo Thomasaccording to a statement from the family to the newspaper Today.

No further details about the cause of death have been released.
