Any IT expert in the world will tell you – computers or smartphones – that restarting the device stops all running applications and resets the machine to a known state.
For IT technicians, this helps remedy all kinds of anomalies. From a security perspective, it can even remove certain types of viruses or malware.
So this is a very simple operation and within everyone’s reach, briefly turning off your phone every day requires relatively little effort and is extremely easy to do.
Effective once morest targeted malware
If restarting can be a panacea for a computer that is acting up, in terms of security, it is especially effective once morest a certain type of threat. Targeted malware, aimed at a specific person, can be delivered through what is known as a zero-day exploit, a software vulnerability so new that it is not yet possible to guard once morest it.
The “no-click” message is one of the most common vulnerabilities.
Simply put, the hacker sends a carefully crafted message to the target’s phone and deploys malware without the user needing to click (or tap) anything. The message then deletes itself, so the victim is unaware of the attack.
It’s terrible, but by restarting your phone, the malware lodged in the RAM will be deleted and the attacker will have to redeploy it.
Versatile solution
It is very unlikely that you will be the victim of such a targeted attack unless you are a political dissident, journalist, politician, etc. But the restart trick remains useful in other areas.
For example, turning off the power closes permanent connections for some apps that track you or collect data from your device, clears temporary files, and frees up RAM.
Beyond simply turning off the phone, the preventive advice remains the same: do not open unsolicited emails, never download unknown attachments, do not click on potentially malicious links in emails, messages on the media social or text messages and be careful regarding the applications you install on your devices.
