Astrophotographic was never the strength of iPhone. Although it is possible to use Apple’s smartphone for this purpose, it never had a capture mode made exactly for fans of this area, something that some competitors in the Android world have been doing for a while — although, sometimes, with some “cheating”, it is true (Samsung… cof, cof).
A new product from Vaonis, however, promises to turn the iPhone into a true telescope capable of taking pictures even of the sun. Called Hestiait was made to be used with a smartphone and its design has already raised more than US$750 mil no Kickstarter.
About the size of a book, the Hestia is relatively portable, with a 30mm lens and an array of prisms to direct light entering the telescope to the iPhone’s camera. It also has a 25x optical zoom and has a solar filter (optional) for capturing images of our star.
The device is controlled by the app. Gravity, by Vaonis herself. It helps the user to identify stars in the sky and also teaches some curiosities regarding the cosmos. For “instagrammers” on duty, it also has a mode that combines multiple low-exposure images into a single high-quality photo, ready to be shared.
According to the manufacturer, the device has six lenses in three groups, a field of view of 1.8º and supports images in JPEG and TIFF.
The Hestia also comes with a tripod stand and works with a variety of smartphones as it has an adjustable magnetic mount. In total, it weighs exactly 500g and measures 17x24x5.5cm.
Anyone who decides to support the project can now take Hestia by US$190 no Standard Pack, which includes the device itself, the tripod and a dust cover. The solar filter, in turn, comes out for an additional US$40.
Vaonis promises to launch Hestia before the day April 8, 2024, which is when the next solar eclipse will cross the North American sky. Cool, isn’t it? ????
