Turn signals: “I use them, the rest don’t”

When driving, the maneuvers that are made are constantly communicated to alert pedestrians and other drivers, thus avoiding a road accident. Turning a corner, parking, entering a garage, are actions that are carried out throughout the day. But what happens if we don’t communicate them? Do Argentines recognize themselves as responsible when it comes to “notifying” the maneuvers? What do you think of the rest of the drivers?

To inquire regarding the subject, the CECAITRA Road Observatory, the Chamber that brings together companies that produce road software, conducted a telephone survey in more than a thousand homes in CABA and Greater Buenos Aires, asking regarding their own attitude and that of others.

First, the question was asked: “Regarding the use of turn signals, how often do you use them to signal a turn?”, and 9 out of 10 (89.3%) said they always use them; 5.5% almost always; 2% stated that they never use them and 0.5% only sometimes. The rest, he did not answer. If the ages of the respondents are analyzed, differences are seen, while the option that always used the lights was chosen by 80.2% of those under 29 years of age, the percentage rose to 94% in adults between 30 and 49 years of age.

The survey also wanted to know the opinion of other drivers regarding the use of lights. Thus, he asked himself: “And according to your opinion, how often do you think that drivers of vehicles in Argentina use turn signals?” There, only 12.1% of drivers always use them; 80.6% only sometimes and 6.7% never.

The data supports that the drivers see the irresponsibility in the others, but affirm to act correctly in their own case.

“The survey carried out by the Observatorio Vial showed that, although a large majority said they always used the turning lights, it is worth wondering regarding the possible existence of a high degree of distorted responses, by drivers who do not recognize the non-use of the lights. lights. This is verified when they are consulted on how they are used by others. The data supports that drivers see irresponsibility in others, but they claim to act correctly in their own case”, said the spokesman for the CECAITRA Road Observatory, Facundo Jaime.

Finally, he also inquired regarding driving in the rain, and asked himself: Do you consider it correct to turn on the emergency beacons to drive when it rains? And 69.6% did not consider it correct; 24.7% said yes and 3.3% did not know. The rest did not choose any option.

Article 47 of the national traffic law states that “emergency flashing lights: must be used to indicate detention at toll stations, dangerous areas or in the execution of risky maneuvers.”

“There is a lot of confusion regarding the use of these lights. As stated by law, rain is not a case in which beacons must be used. What is recommended is to drive with extreme care, taking into account that when the pavement is wet, more meters are required to stop the vehicle”, concluded Jaime.
