Today, Tuesday, the Istanbul police seized an unprocessed rough diamond with a market value of 20 million Turkish liras (equivalent to one million dollars), during a security operation in the Grand Bazaar, one of the city’s historical commercial centers.
According to media reports, the Istanbul Police Department and the Financial Crimes Department received a report regarding a diamond smuggling operation estimated at 61.38 carats in the historic Grand Bazaar.
After preliminary investigations, the police launched a secret operation to monitor the bazaar since April 12, during which day the shop where the precious metal was located was raided, and four suspects of different nationalities were detained.
The media revealed that the confiscated diamond was smuggled to Turkey illegally from an African country south of the Sahara, considering that this is one of the most prominent security operations in Turkey to combat the smuggling of precious metals.
