Türkiye is the second strongest nation in asylum applications in Austria

The 8,299 applications this month represent a 49 percent decrease compared to the same month in 2022. If you take the first nine months of 2023 as a whole, there are 42 percent fewer applications than in the same period last year.

According to the Interior Ministry, the Austrian figures ran counter to the European trend. By the end of September there had been more than 800,000 asylum applications in the EU, an increase of 27.5 percent. Germany shows an increase of 74 percent, Italy 63 percent. Stronger controls in the border area, a determined fight against smugglers and faster procedures are responsible for the development in Austria.

Almost 24,000 “disappeared” this year

More than 23,900 people evaded the procedure in Austria in the first nine months. In most cases this means that they have traveled on to other countries that were their actual destination countries. To this end, a total of 9,259 deportations were carried out by the end of September, of which 4,780 were voluntary departures and 4,479 were forced.

Syrians also established themselves as the strongest nation in September. But Turks and Moroccans are now arriving before Afghans and are seeking protection in Austria.

80,000 people currently receiving basic care

At the beginning of October, the basic service looked after 37,570 asylum seekers, asylum seekers and those entitled to protection. The larger group is 42,451 war-displaced people from Ukraine.

Almost 900 age assessments were carried out in the first nine months of the year. According to the Interior Ministry, these have shown that more than 58 percent are already adult strangers and only around 41.7 percent are minors. The latter group is favored in the process.
