Reuters reported that the Turkish Competition Authority imposed a temporary measure on the “Meta” company aimed at obstructing the exchange of data between the “Instagram” and “Threads” platforms while it investigates the possibility of misusing the company’s dominant position in the market.

In December, the authority launched an investigation into Meta, the parent company of Facebook, regarding a possible violation of competition law by linking its social media platforms, Instagram and the newer Threads.

The authority said: “The temporary measure will remain in place until a final decision is made, because the data obtained and combined through these two applications might violate competition law and cause irreparable harm to the market.”

Separately, the Turkish authorities imposed a fine of 4.8 million liras ($148,000) per day on Meta, as part of a separate investigation via a notification message sent by the company to users regarding data sharing.

She added that the notification regarding data sharing between the company’s Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp services did not provide sufficient information, and was not transparent enough.

She continued: “The user notice was also designed to direct users to agree to share data that was not deemed sufficient to address anti-competitive concerns.”
