Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Saturday, was sworn in as President of Turkey for a third term of five years, amid worsening economic problems in this country.

After his re-election on May 28 in an unprecedented second round of elections, the 69-year-old president, who has been in power for two decades, was sworn in, promising to “fulfill my duty with impartiality.”

After that, he visited the tomb of the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, before a protocol ceremony held in the presidential palace, and then a dinner, following which he announced the formation of his government.

The Turkish president said in parliament: “As president, I swear to work with all my resolve to protect the existence and independence of the state, the unconditional sovereignty of the nation, the rule of law and the principle of a secular republic,” as established by Ataturk, “the father of the Turks.”

During his speech at the presidential complex, Erdogan said that he would announce the formation of the new government within hours, and that it would hold its first meeting this week.

Erdogan’s coalition won 323 seats, while the opposition coalition won 212, distributed as follows: Justice and Development 268 seats, Welfare Again 5, Nationalist Movement 50, Green Left 61, Turkish Workers 4, Republican People 169, and Good 43.

In a speech following his victory, the Turkish president stressed that this stage is for “harmony and unity.” He added, “It was not only us who won in these elections, but Turkey also won, and today the results of the services that we have done over more than 20 years are embodied.”

Regarding his future plans, the Turkish president declared, “We have before us a new economic renaissance and a strong start, and we will push the terrorists away from our country’s borders.”

He said, “We are now taking confident and sure steps towards security and stability. The elections are over, and we must now harness our efforts to produce and heal the wounds of the earthquake victims.”

He added, “Increasing prices and economic problems are at the forefront of our concerns, and difficulties cannot stop our resolve, and we will continue to advance the defense industries sector in our country.”
