Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the winners of the May 14 and May 28 elections numbered 85 million citizens.

Erdogan won more than 52 percent of the vote in Sunday’s presidential run-off, which came two weeks following he failed to secure a decisive victory in the first round.

But the majority of Turkish voters in the second round chose Erdogan over his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu, showing their support for a man they see as a strong leader.

In two speeches – one in Istanbul and one in Ankara – Erdogan thanked the nation for entrusting him with the presidency for another five years.

“Nobody lost today. All 85 million Turks won. As a condition of the responsibility given to us by our nation, we are not offended, resentful or angry with anyone,” Erdogan told hundreds of thousands gathered outside the presidential palace in Ankara.

He added, “Now is the time to set aside all discussions and conflicts regarding the election period. It is time for us to unite around our national goals and dreams.”

He continued, “We are not the only winners. The winner is Turkey. Our nation with all its factions won.”

Türkiye celebrates its centenary this year.

In a related context, Erdogan said: “The terrorist who killed 51 of our Kurdish brothers in Diyarbakir is Selo (Saladin Demirtas, the imprisoned Kurdish leader).”
