Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that work is underway to set a date for a meeting with the head of the Syrian regime, Bashar al-Assad, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and it may be before the elections in Turkey, according to our talks with the Russian side.

Cavusoglu explained, during a television interview with the channel:tv 100Al-Turkiya said that this meeting needs preparations, and a number of dates were proposed for it, one of which was in early May, which is very close to the date of the elections, but it did not happen because the Iranian president will go to Syria at this time.

Cavusoglu indicated that the meeting may be preceded by a meeting of foreign ministers to complete the necessary preparations for the meeting between Erdogan and Assad.

The minister stressed that the conditions of the regime in these talks are not appropriate, because if Turkish soldiers withdraw from Syria, “terrorist organizations” will fill these gaps, which threatens Turkey’s national security.

Today, Tuesday, the defense ministers and heads of intelligence departments of the Syrian regime, Turkey, Russia and Iran will meet in the Russian capital, Moscow.

The Quartet’s foreign ministers were scheduled to meet in early May, according to several Russian sources, after the deputy foreign ministers met in Moscow, on April 4, to coordinate after that to meet the leaders.

Since its inception on December 28, 2022, through the meeting of the defense ministers of the regime, Turkey and Russia in Moscow, the course of the Turkish-regime rapprochement has not witnessed any official meeting between the two parties outside the framework of defense ministers and intelligence officials, and recently deputy foreign ministers, despite the talk about the Cannes roadmap. It is hoped that it will lead to a presidential meeting that brings together the Turkish president and his Russian counterpart, and the head of the regime, before the Turkish elections scheduled for May 14.

The Turkish Foreign Minister had previously questioned the level of influence that the political meeting between Assad and Erdogan could achieve, considering that “we cannot say anything against the comments in the international media. Assad must be held accountable. Meeting Assad before or after the elections will not be an advantage for us, perhaps it will be an obstacle.”

In mid-April, the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, stated that preparations for the meeting of foreign ministers between Iran, Turkey, Russia and Syria are under way, and that there are no preconditions for it, stressing that by saying, “Our position is very simple: the preconditions are not appropriate.”
