Turkish karateka Samdan wins gold at Mediterranean Games

Turkish karateka Eray Samdan won a gold medal on Sunday on the first day of the Mediterranean Games.

Samdan, 24, won 5-0 against Algerian Ala Salmi in the men’s kumite event in the 60 kg category in the coastal city of Oran, Algeria.

Earlier in the day, another Turkish athlete, Tuba Yakan, won a bronze medal in the women’s kumite event in the 55kg category, after defeating Greek Cypriot administration native Ariannne Miles Gonzales.

Nearly 3,400 athletes from 26 countries are competing in 24 different disciplines at the Olympic Stadium in Oran, Algeria.

Taking part in the Mediterranean Games with 321 athletes, Türkiye is the third largest group in the competition, after Italy with 371, and host country Algeria with 324.

The Mediterranean Games, a multi-sport event organized by the International Committee for the Mediterranean Games (CIJM), take place every four years and bring together the countries of Africa, Asia and Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
